How to Apply to Grants, Fellowships, and Residencies | Led by Ananda Lima
Developing writers often know to invest time in learning about their craft and the path to publication (and rightly so). But there is a part of the writing life that is also important, though often overlooked: getting support for your writing through grants, fellowships, and residencies. In this workshop, we will demystify the process and give you the basis to prepare strong applications that illuminate your work while conveying its importance, potential, and commitment to your craft. The class will include the following topics:

  • How to find opportunities for different stages of your career and of particular projects (e.g., work-in-progress versus finished work)
  • Evaluating opportunities (including financial aspects and other considerations, like the potential impact on your writing career)
  • Understanding what the readers might be looking for
  • Writing applications and artist statements
  • Staying organized and managing logistics
  • Managing emotional aspects of the application process (and maybe even finding joy in it)
  • Seeing applications as tools to better understand your own work and how to describe it to others
This workshop is for writers at different stages of their careers (from beginners to advanced writers) who want to be ready to apply for support for their writing.
