How can a poem disrupt linearity, chronology, or the way a reader’s eye expects to move across the page? In this generative craft course, we will read and discuss “multidirectional” texts—poems that offer multiple readings and pathways, that untether the line from the left margin, that destabilize a one-way poetics. Discussions will consider the ghazal form, visual poems, improvisational/jazz poetics, and texts by Agha Shahid Ali, Anthony Cody, Elisa Gabbert, Marwa Helal, Nathaniel Mackey, Lynn Xu, and more. During each session, we will write together toward an understanding of how we might incorporate multidirectionality into our own writing, as well as what poetic arguments these anti-linearities might serve.
