When I write a book, I want to write a queer classic. What does this mean? And how have queer writers created these books? This seminar will focus on the craft methods that queer writers have used, from humor as a form of toughness to writing from the margins of society to using painful violent personal history. The class will look at texts from queer authors from the twentieth century to the present, reading selections from Andrew Holleran, Heather Lewis, Alexander Chee, Gary Indiana, Raven Leilani, James Baldwin, and more. Students will engage through literary discussion, prompts, craft talks, and leave with ideas on how to craft their own future queer classic.
