Much of the great drama in fiction comes from the friction between two elements: dialogue and interiority. Bad dialogue is easily spotted on the page. Pinpointing what makes dialogue good is more difficult. That is because, often, good dialogue is something the reader should barely notice. Its naturalism is its power; its wisdom, its grace.
A character’s interiority is potentially a greater opportunity to roam. Showing the methodology of a thought process or how a character reacts to the world around them is the best way to deepen an inner life.
This two-day workshop will examine examples of good dialogue on the page, on TV, trends in contemporary and classic dialogue, and question how to make every line of speech a characterizing affair. It will also focus on the power of interiority, when to lean in, when to lighten up. The class will be bolstered by close readings, mini-exercises, lectures, and open discussions.
