This three-session craft class will rely on classic, contemporary, and cutting-edge creative nonfiction as models for exploring our own true stories. We will examine voice, form, character, and structure, generate new work, and share some of it in a workshop environment. We’ll focus mostly on contemporary work.
Some of the authors we’ll be reading include: Natalie Ginzberg, Ryan Van Meter, Ocean Vuong, Lidia Yuknavich, Gina Frangello, and Kate Zambreno. Excerpts from Mary Karr’s The Art of Memoir and Vivian Gornick’s “The Situation and the Story” will serve as a guide to both analyzing and writing personal essays.
